Kitesurfen is een zeer spectaculaire sport die wereldwijd zeer snel groeit. Ook in Nederland is deze freestyle sport inmiddels immens populair, zowel onder mannen als vrouwen, en de Nederlandse toppers scoren hoog op internationale events. Kitesurfen is een soort mix van wakeboarden en windsurfen. Je gebruikt een klein kiteboard van rond de 1,40m en een vlieger die varieert van 8 tot 20m2. De vlieger wordt in deze context meestal kite genoemd. Deze kite zorgt ervoor dat je met je board op het water blijft drijven en op die manier over het water kunt varen. Je hebt om te kunnen kitesurfen geen golven nodig, wind is voldoende. Omdat het board zo klein is, is het heel wendbaar en licht. Bij het kitesurfen kun je snelheden halen tot ongeveer 90km/u en sprongen maken van ruim 20 meter hoog en 100 meter ver. Hardboard is sinds 2004 actief met het kitesurfen. Sinds Hardboard hiermee begonnen is, is de vereniging hard gegroeid en veel actiever geworden. De kitesurfers van Hardboard surfen fanatiek in Nederland, maar zijn ook al meerdere malen in Frankrijk, Fuerte Ventura en Egypte geweest. Omdat Enschede nog niet aan zee ligt, hebben we een eigen bus. In deze bus kunnen 7 kitesurfers met materiaal vervoerd worden. Deze bus brengt ons naar alle kitespots in een straal van 4000 kilometer. Het varieert van Workum tot aan Marokko en van IJmuiden tot aan Zuid-Frankrijk.

Hoewel kitesurfen in principe een individuele sport is, is het juist dit punt waar Hardboard meerwaarde biedt ten opzichte van kitesurfen in je eentje. Uiteraard is het veel gezelliger, maar het is ook veel goedkoper. Kitesurfmateriaal is duur en daarom heeft Hardboard kite-materiaal dat tegen een zeer gunstige prijs wordt verhuurd aan leden. Op die manier blijft kitesurfen betaalbaar en kun je vele soorten kites en boards uit proberen.

Het is geen enkel probleem als je nog nooit gesurft of gevliegerd hebt. Je kunt met Hardboard vrijblijvend mee op een instructieweekend of instructiedag. Hardboard zorgt er dan voor dat je de sport onder de knie krijgt en dat je daarna zelfstandig verder kunt.

Het is een sport die prima geschikt is om even een middagje te doen of om in de winter te doen. Het grote voordeel van roadsurfen ten opzichte van kitesurfen en windsurfen, is dat je het gewoon in Enschede kunt doen. Meestal wordt de parkeerplaats van het Arke stadion of de campus gebruikt om te roadsurfen.
