Control Engineering is one of the chairs of the Department of Electrical Engineering in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science. Besides the PhD–students, every year about 10-15 MSc–students take part in the research of the group and obtain their MSc–degree.

The research of Control Engineering is carried out in the Institutes IMPACT and CTIT. Control Engineering participates in the national research school DISC (Dutch Institute of Systems and Control). The research of the group is application oriented. Main goal is to investigate the applicability of modern systems and control methods to practical situations. The Control Engineering group works on the following projects:

intelligent control

modelling and simulation of physical systems

measurement and instrumentation

Application, realisation and utilisation are realised in the projects:

advanced robotics and mechatronics embedded control systems

Where applicable, developed methods and knowledge are made available in the form of

software tools for modelling, simulation and control

Interesting assignments for students are available on these topics.

Through the years, Control Engineering has been popular amongst students as a group for doing a BSc- or MSc-project. Typical for the work in Control Engineering is the multidisciplinary systems approach. This becomes apparent in the main application area, mechatronics, where a background in information technology (electrical engineering and computer science) as well as in mechanical engineering is essential to come to an optimal system design.

But the scope of the educational programme is broader. The analysis and design philosophy and the tools used for designing mechatronic systems (modelling and simulation, controller design and realisations in embedded computer systems) are applicable to many technical and non technical systems. It is therefore not surprising that graduates from the group Control Engineering easily find interesting jobs in a wide variety of application areas.

Control Engineering group participates in the

BSc programme 'Electrical Engineering' with a number of compulsory courses.

The group Control Engineering welcomes (international) students interested in the

MSc programme Mechatronics. and in the MSc programme Electrical Engineering for the specialisations

Measurement and Control Engineering and Embedded (control) systems The language for the MSc programmes is English.
